Timing belts age?

Post by Rocky »

Looking through the service manuals for my two cars the Xc70 has a 125k mile replacement and no time limit. The Honda Pilot has a 105k seven year limit.
Anyone have concerns about the TB aging? The xc is a 2003 bought may 2003 and 90k. Any concerns about ths belt getting too old?

7 years. I'd change that belt as soon as possible.

Manual says replace at 105k miles but it would be safer to replace sooner. These TBelts could snap anytine w/o warning and that's gonna hurt you in the wallet.

[sarcasm] Timing belt is considered a life time part, just like the transmission fluid. That is when the timing belt fails the engine has reached the end of its useful life, just like the transmission [/sacasm] BMW used to suggest every 60,000 or 2 yrs. On my XC70 every 105,000 is recommended, I intend to change mine every 3 years or 100,000.

2-3 years on a timing belt??? That's a bit excessive. Personally, I'd stick to 7 years or 70k miles as specified for the older 5 cylinder models.

i have a 2008 S60 with 85000 miles
i would prefer to change mine long before 105K

I have never seen a timing belt fail on its own, I have however seen where the tensioner pulley shaft deflected in the metal plate that holds it (the shaft was pressed and then swagged into the plate, almost all are done this way and I do not like the design one bit, I little weld would make me a lot happier) , which caused the belt to chafe against the belt cover. When that belt let go I got to buy a new head.

I just change my belt and tensioner every 3 years or 100,000 figuring that $200 and 2hrs is a lot cheaper and easier to schedule than $3000 and 16 hrs.
