taking the plunge into ATF

OK, I've been actively in the debates over flush - no dont flush, drain and fill - no dont drain and fill, change - no dont change etc.

So I was down a little fluid (2/3 qt) and bought the big 5qt OEM jug. Its been sitting in my cabinet taunting me for months.

So, I'm going to do a modest drain and fill. I am going to get a small siphon tube and siphon 3 qts out of the fill tube and replace it with 3 qts of new.

This should be a gentle change, no flushing, no debris, no opening or loosening seals/part/etc. And it will exchange a portion of my fluid with new OEM fluid.

I think this is a modest middle-ground.

Thats my project for this weekend. Well, and give my older S60 another good once-over since my daughter is starting to drive it today

Why siphon it out? Why not just pull the plug and drain it?

I vote drain. The drain plug is purposely placed to be in the lowest place where sediment will accumulate and will have a chance to drain out. These transaxles have a strainer that is not accessible w/o splitting the case. The idea is any clutch wear particle will settle and any metal filings will be held by the magnet on drain plug.

I bought a replacement plug from the dealer. I had to pick up a sealing ring and figured for $5 more dollars I'd have new threads. The plug has no magnet on it.

And, does anyone have a torque spec on the drain plug (2007 S60 2.5)

45º rule has work for me with aluminum washer/seal on V70XC.

The replacement plug was the same thread but much longer and had a smaller head. I decided not to change it since I wasn't 100% sure it was universally compatible (figured it was but just to be safe didnt want the extra length bumping into stuff inside).

I did replace the aluminum washer (used the 45deg advice for tightening).

Exactly 3.5 qt drained. Absolutely no metallic fuzz or grit. The fluid was brownish red and opaque, unlike the clear bright red when new. Overall it was reasonable in condition.

Neither drain plug was magnetic.

My previously recommended Measu-Flow funnel from Advance Auto Parts was *PERFECT* for this. I could fill the reservoir, then open it slowly to run down the dipstick tube. And, the dipstick retainer clip held the funnel tube in place so it wouldn't pop out.

It was PERFECT!

I have always used this funnel since your recommendation Fazool. It is the best choice, I say.
