2000 v70 Non-turbo stalled

Post by dmpi1719 »

My 2000 v70 wagon cut out one or twice while my daughter was driving last week, but after a couple minutes she was able to start up and continue her journey. Yesterday my wife was out shoping. When she started the car it went about 100 yards and stalled. She couldn't get it to start. I drove over to pick her up about 15 minutes later and the car started right up. Unfortunately we only got about a couple hundred yards and it stalled again. We were near an advance auto so I had them check the codes. The ABS light was on and the only code was P0500. We left the car in the parking lott for a couple hours and then when we went back to get it it started right up again. Drove about half a mile and stalled. Waited about 10 minutes and it started up again. Drove about a quarter minl and it stalled again. Finally we just towed it home. Luckily we were only about 3 miles from the house. :(

I need some ideas quickly because we're supposed to take the car on a 350 mile round trip this Sunday. Other than the stalling, the only problem I've been having is a recurring ABS light. Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

I vote the fuel pump relay.

Remove the screws around the fuse panel near the windshield (I believe they're T-25 Torx). Lift up the cover and remove relay #103. Stick a jumper wire between pins 15 and 87, and see if the car will stay running. If that's it, just buy a new relay and you're on your way.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check the relay this evening and let you know if that works.

I got home this evening and pulled the fuel pump relay. I wanted to jump the relay as instructed but it has 4 posts. I don't know which ones to attach clips to; please advise. Right now the car won't start at all.

Sorry jblackburn, I didn't pay close attention to what you had written. I jumped the 15 and 87 pins and the car started. I'm off to find a new relay. Thanks for the great advice.

No problem. Glad it was that simple.

The ABS module is probably failing solder joints in the module, but not a huge cause for concern. I'd still fix it when possible, because ABS has saved my butt a few times in the rain or traffic that suddenly comes to a stop.

Matty Moo (search for him here on the site) repairs the modules for a very reasonable cost if you remove it and send it to him - $60 I think last I saw.

I found the relay at a local volvo shop for $56.00. Put it in and the car fired right up. I also found a thread on another forum talking about the ABS module. The guy said that he had put a small wedge between the ABS module and the pump and that had casued his light to go out. I tried using a couple of old credit cards to make a wedge and slipped it in. Sure enough the light went out. I then drove the car on my 400 mile round-trip and the ABS light never appeared. Do you know why that worked? I know it hasn't "fixed" my problem, I still need to get that module reparied and I'll be looking up Matty Moo for that; I'm just curious why it worked.

Glad the FPR solved your problem.

That "fix" pushed the cracked solder joints back together.

As a lot of power goes through those joints, I would NOT call it a "safe" fix and would send that module off as soon as possible.

Heard about the Escapes with the modules that have been catching on fire? Something similar happens to those.

Then again, every car seems to be being recalled for catching on fire anymore!
