S40 1.8 petrol wont start and other issues

Post by ralphy438 »

Hello all.

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have a Volvo S40 1.8 petrol. The car seems to have a number of issues.
1. The fan belt needs replacing as it squeaks. Due to be done next week.
2. The car occasionally stalls and then will not start again. A quick jump and it starts fine. I have been told that there is plenty of volts going to the battery so it doesnt appear to be that.
3. Sometimes when pulling away there is very little power and then all of a sudden it kicks in.
4. Sometimes when I change gear I hear a rattling noise (sounds like exhaust but not sure).
5. The engine bay smells like burnt oil but doesnt appear to have a leak.

I am at my wits end what is wrong with it. I have been told many different things as to what could be wrong. I would like to fix the issues myself if they are minor rather than paying expensive mechanic fees.

Does anyone have any ideas.

No start without jump battery weak check and also check ground from battery to body
Sudden acceleration. Is it a turbo?
Rattling when changing gear. Likely clutch related.
Oily smell blocked PVC system. Clean pipes replace PVC and oil trap if fitted

Thanks Rocky.

It is a turbo but its not the turbo kicking in. It seems to have very little power when I pull away and then the power comes back. It finally conked out earlier. Every time I touched the accelerater it rattled. I was lucky to get it home. All the idle revs are at about 400rpm.

I think its got to go to the garage and have a diagnostic test
