Power steering pump problem

Post by selting »

Good afternoon. I'm new to the site. I have a 2004 Volvo Xc90 with over 204,000 miles on it. It was a one owner car and we bought it three years ago and have been religous about the upkeep of the car. Two Fridays ago, I had the oil changed and the cabin filter replaced. Last Saturday the alternator went out and i was able to get to a Pep Boys. They replaced the alternator for 500.00 and they rotated the tires for me. I picked it up Monday night after work. Yesterday I noticed the car was quite loud felt some hesitation when driving, heard a sucking sound and the steering somewhat difficult. This morning the steering was again difficult. As i had absolutely NO problems with the steering before the alternator was replaced, I took it back to the garage. They called me a 3hile ago to tell me that my Power steering pump needs replacing to the tune of 800-1,000. I'm furious. I had no problems with the steering until the alternator is fixed???? Is there a chance they could have damaged the pump fixing the alternator or rotating the tires?

I would go get it and add some power steering fluid to it. The pump was loosened up and moved to do the alternator. fluid could have leaked then or a hose was disturbed and is leaking now. There is also an issue that can occur with the reservoir where a pipe on the inside comes loose and lets air get mixed wth the oil. The airy fluid will make pump noisy and the effort will be higher.

I would expect a Pep Boys service center to know very little about your Volvo.
