Missing AM band

Post by volvo 1st timer »

Hi
I am new to this (or indeed any) forum so please excuse the nature of this post if the solution is obvious to others.
I have recently bought a Volvo V50 second hand. All was working well until the car was recalled by Volvo to have the clutch connecting rod uprated.

Since I got the car back, the AM band on the radio has been interittant or non-existant. I rang my local dealership and explained the problem and they told me that they haven't done anything that would effect the radio.
Could this be an unfortunate co-incidence?
Anyhow, I am now without the AM band, which is a bit of a sod as I can't listen to the Olympics or the footbal when the season starts in afew weeks! Everything else is working fine, CD, FM band and Aux.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can resolve this problem?

The clutch pedal is on the left side in the RH footwell, the Integrated Audio Module (IAM, the radio receiver is in this unit which is also the CD player) has its antenna lead on the RH side. It would be too easy for the work to have tugged on the antenna lead and pulled it part way or all the way out of the IAM.
The AM antenna is on the RH rear side glass (cargo area glass) and a bit on the back heated glass as well (the AM and FM parts are not identified as to location in the two possible areas) and the elements can be worn off from vigorous cleaning or use of a razor blade. Did you have window film installed lately?
If nothing has been done that could upset the glass then the clutch recall is a very likely cause. Make the dealer a proposition. If antenna lead is checked and secure then you pay for the check. If they make the AM come back because it was loose then you do not pay.

An update on my missing AM.
I called my local dealer in Bristol and told them that my AM band was missing and without even skipping a beat they told me that the IAM module was faulty and would need a replacement - £495.
It is al leaving a bit of a bitter taste in my mouth. Anyhoo, I think I might have to decide how much I want to listen to the footie or the Olympics!!

2008 C30, same problem, fm /cd player worked fine; 45,000 miles
took to dealer, they nodded their head and said it was common problem; fixed under warranty however I don't
receive AM stations with a distance of more than 100 miles like I used to. Plan to take back to see if it can be tweaked
a little bit.
will post a reply.

Thanks for the response.
I have since sent a letter to Volvo UK. I have told them about the problem and how badly I think I have been treated.
I am waiting a reply. Will keep you posted.
