Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2001 S80 Slight Ticking Front Passanger

Post by merkloe21 »

I am the owner of a 2001 S80. The car treats me very well.
I had started to notice a slight ticking noise that seems to be coming from the front passangers side when accelerating into second gear. It only does this when the car feels as if it is about to possibly under shift. After it is in 2nd, the noise goes away, and the car performs exceptionally well into higher speeds. I do have a check engine light code that reads that my system is running either too rich or too lean. I had took it into Walnut Creek, CA, and was told I had a engine mount that is going bad and was also re affirmed that the codes were as such (air/fuel mixture). Could this problem I am hearing from my front passenger's side be in relation to the engine mount, or the fault codes?

Thanks!

It could be from either. Luckily both need to be fixed right away. Once they are ruled out then more diagnosis can be considered.

What is the frequency of the ticking? Is it loud or soft? Heavy or light? Is it rpm dependent or speed dependent?

It is RPM dependant. It only occurs when the shift into second is about to fall below 2500 RPMS. It feels as If I have to really push the engine to make the proper shift into second gear. It happens quite frequently now.
I would say the ticking is light in comparison to other ticks I have heard in engines, lifters etc..
the sound is a sort of a mixture of a rattle and tick.
