The AC is driven directly off the engine - so yes when the ocmpressor comes on- it draws a little more power.

However - no with the volvo - mainly because it's a large cylinder capacity there should be no drop in revs, it should remain steady when the air-con cuts in and out

I'm guessing you have a petrol model as this is more common with them.
I forget the cause though - but it can be a sign of a fault ETM - what year and model is your vehicle, and how many miles/km's has it covered?

for the year then - yes quite possible it's the ETM. - Electroic Throttle Managment. The Acelerator and idle is all fly by wire controled by this unit - gone are the days of cables etc. This unit has caused the issues you describe - but more seriously can just conk out while your doing 70 leavig you with no power.

Take a look at the following link to the ETM room on this site - quite a few postings about it.

Other posibilites are Alternator/belts or simply eed to get the timing checked.
Plus probably many other things not necessailry the ETM ie don't want you panicking, I'm no mechanic, just a few sugestions.

good luck.
