I would like thank you all for this great forum and ask that you forgive me as this is my first Volvo and I'm not up on the proper terms. I hope I don't murder them too much.
I have a 2001 Volvo XC 70 AWD Automatic with 150000 miles on it, that I'm working on for a friend. It was bought 3 weeks ago for $3000, The carrier bearing for the rear drive shaft was bad and I assume it was allowing the shaft to bounce and lead to the failure of what I call the Rear differential. I was told it's called the Transfer case.
The front of the transfer case was snapped off leaving the car with no rear drive. The dealer it was bought from agreed to provide a replacement transfer case and drive shaft. (junk yard) If I do the work it will cost only time.
The problem is that there is no power going to the front wheels, the rear shaft still turns but nothing happens up front.
The dealer told me that once the rear is fixed the front will work again... I find this had to believe.
My understanding is that I should still have power going to the front wheels. am I right?
My thought is that this is the angle gear in the front causing the problem. If so how do I check it, and replace it.
Also is there a section that will give me a better idea of how replace the rear transfer case. Other than just trying to do it with my knowledge of other car systems.
Thanks in advance Doug.

The sleeve coupling the transmission to the bevel gear can be defective (worn out splines).
Look at the following thread (message #10).

Thank you for the replay,
I got the rear T/C out this afternoon, and will start on the front tomorrow while I'm waiting for the new rear T/C
would I be better off finding a good replacement for the front also, or is changing the sleeve the better way to go?

The sleeve can be considered as a fuse. The bevel gear needs to be removed to assess shaft condition. Volvo offers an upgraded sleeve as replacement. Verify with your local Volvo dealer for part number. You can "Google it" for more information on the subject.
In the following thread you have a removal procedure for the P1 models. It will give you an idea of the work involved.

You can also look in the repair database of this site for more information on the AWD system. Find this good write-up on drive shaft maintenance. It may be a good idea to lubricate it before installation.

Also find this reference giving general information on the drivetrain.

This repair is more frequent in areas where they have hard winter or when the car is abused.
You may save the BG replacement.

Update since I work a 72 hr week at my normal job I haven't time to mess with this car till this weekend.
I got the front tore apart and although very rusty the sleeve looks ok. I put the car back together without the front bevel gear in and the front wheels work again Yeah. I noticed that the boot on the right half shaft looked stretched out as if the axle wasn't in all the way. I made sure to push it in all the way. and it works now so I'm hoping that was it.
