Hello,
Great website! I could sure use some advice......
I just bought an 88, 760 Turbo from a friend.
Now the thing has intermittant starting problems. Never did before he swears.
Drove it for several days just fine. Cranks fine and starts after 8 or 9 cranks.
Parked it at work one day and it wouldn't start for 3 days. Had it towed to an independent Volvo mechanic. He said good news and bad news..... Good news is it started right up the first time he tried it. Bad news ...same..... don't know why it didn't start on me.
So he kindly replaced two fan relays under the hood and said if it happens again to replace the Fuel pump relay in the console.
Sure enough, Drove it 3 days, got it home and it cranked fine for 3 more days but wouldn't start.
Bought the Fuel pump relay and installed it. Wouldn't start. 3 days later tried it again, started right up.
Great!
Drove it 3 days. brought it home..won't start!!
I have a car that I can't take anywhere because I never know if it will start and I may not get home?
Can you give me any help? or ideas what to try?
I see comments on a wire fault in the distributor, Hall sensor? But have no idea.
I can't hear the fuel pump whirr even when it starts fine.
Thanks for your time,
Scott Burcham

I found infromation to test the Fuel Pump relay by jumping a couple of contacts,
'Worked fine I hear the whirr of both main and tank pump.
Replaced the Fuel pump relay with another new one but still wont start?
Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,
Yes, it could be the Hall sensor or the ignition amplifier, I have had both faults, and the car was acting like yours.
Look at the rpm-meter when trying to start, if it is showing 500 - 600 rpm, the ignition system is OK. If the rpm-meter is showing 0 rpm, ignition is dead and it could be a good idea to change the Hall sensor. It is always good to have a look at the rpm-meter when it's not starting, the rpm-meter is connected straigt to the ignition coil, low voltage side.

Thanks La Ray,
I really appreciate the information.
I did look at the Tach and sure enough it isn't moving when it cranks.
I guess I will try the HAll sensor and ignition amplifier, if I can find it.
Thanks again.
Best regards,
Scott

Hi Scott,
When my Hall sensor was broken, I found something very odd when trying to find the fault. I loosened the electric plug from the ignition power stage ( ignition amplifier) with ignition off and put the plug back again. The car started after that and worked sometimes for several days. It made me very confused.

Hi LaRy,
Well It started right up and ran for 4 days just fine. Cleaned the ignition power stage. Stlii started fine.
Left it in the garage for 2 days and now won't start.
Same stuf. I don't think I hear the fuel pump go on when I turn the ignition to ON.
As soon as it starts again I will take it to the mechanic.
Thanks again for your help!
