Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
What octane gas are you using? Never mind, you already answered that.
What a bunch of nonsense that they tell you to take your bulb out or ignore it. What if you take your CEL bulb out and there's a major problem. Unforgivable.
I'd find another indy mechanic and get a 2nd, or is it a 3rd opinion at this point?
I have a 1999 V70 GLT with the turbo. A couple of years ago my check engine light came on with an emission system code. Independent service checked the gas filler cap (this causes most problems along with overfilling ie. topping off the gas tank which a lot of people do) then changed a small emission system related valve under the hood just behind the radiator on the drivers side. A week later check engine light emission system code, now mind you the car drives fine. Back to the service station, changed the carbon filter. A week later check engine light emission system code again. This time service wanted to take the fuel tank out and replace a sensor. I said NO NO NO. They were into me for about $500.
I went to the Volvo dealership where to make a long story short, they detected a NEGATIVE GROUND wiring problem. No more check engine lights for emission problemsto date.
Current problem is the ETM module since my car stalled without warning in heavy traffic.
My next car will be a Toyota, Lexes or Acura. thank you very much
My car is currently being fixed by an independent Volvo shop and they found out that the wire harness is causing all the problems with my CEL. Apart from changing the wire harness the mechanic is going to put new knock sensors, new temperature sensor, the lines that carry the antifreeze at the back of the engine where the turbo goes are corroded and are leaking so they need to be changed, the engine has a leak from the front engine seal so the seal is going to be replaced. I'm looking at $3,000 in parts and labor at this point. Hopefully changing the wire harness will solve my check engine light problem. I'll keep everyone posted about the repairs being made to my car. Good luck to everyone who is having the same problem.
