Diagnostic connectors for V70 (2002)

I was reading about access to the Diagnostic Connector on a 850T model, and how easy it was. Is it as easy on a V70 (2002 model)?

Nope, sorry. Only 850's up to the '95 model year had this feature. For the newer cars you need to have a code reader to check and reset lambda lights.

Yep, there are tons of them on ebay and most parts stores, at least here in the states, have a few models to choose from.

Try to find one that is marked as compatible with CAN (It's a communication protocol that Volvo started using on the S60/V70 models) for full functionality.

You can buy CAN, but it didn't get started until late '04 in Volvo's.
Simple OBD-II code reader will work fine. I have an Innova Equus 3100...you can find it for about $50-60 now...and it works just fine on my wife's early model '04 V70 and my '98 S70.

You got me curious so I did some searching through my VADIS software that I have. No matter what vehicle I select, through year 2000, all diagnostic are listed as OBD-II, then in 2001, interestingly the word CAN BUS comes up, but still with some OBD-II language/diagnostic ability. Evidently they integrated the CAN BUS protocol slowly. As you say, and are corret, it was available from '99 but only slightly integrated at first. However by late '04, it was finally fully integrated. On my wife's (early) '04 V70, for instance, I can still read engine/transmission/emmision codes with my non-CAN BUS scanner tool and reset the codes. If our car was built for the last part of '04, I doubt that I would be able to do that. So we are both correct. It was available from '99 on, for the then new ME7 ECU (P2 cars), but until then, with the Motronic 4.3 and 4.4 (up through '98, like on my S70) ECU's it wasn't even possible.

I was wrong in saying that it didn't even get started until late '04...it just wasn't fully integrated until then. That makes things confusing for '04 owners...sort of like the Timing belt and tensioner for '98's...up to a certain engine number it was one belt, and after that number it was another.
