Exhaust...the fun don't end!
Exhaust...the fun don't end!
2001 S40. Brought the car into my mechanic to check out exhaust sounds...he said it is the rear cat/ pipe. Contacted FCP- $280+ for a Davico direct-fit. Mechanic said "Hey, is this a California car or Federal"? What? I live in NY...bought the car used in 2004. He took the VIN, called local Volvo Dealership. Dealership said "95% of the cars are Calif emissions. We use our exhaust ($900 for the rear cat section) because others throw codes". How do I REALLY find out if my car is set for California emissions? I am so confused. What happened to the days where I buy a muffler, pop it in, and drive away?

Davico to be avoided by me in future. Their cat for my 850 wagon was almost 1 inch too short and ended up tilted at 10 degrees. The exhaust place had to weld another piece in. It looked ugly and had no heat shield.
Fortunately only one O2 sensor on the 850 but it threw no codes. On the 850 there were fewer emission requirements.
I would go further upmarket in FCP range or call around. Anything made by Bosal or perhaps Magnaflow. You may need to call manufacturers directly to get some real answers. Parts counter guys don't/ can't spend the time to research for you.
