How to replace auxiliary fan?
Hello. I've got the A/C bug and my aux fan is very difficult to turn by hand. Obviously it's causing my fuse to blow and my AC is unreliable. I'm on the verge of ordering a new fan but need help. #1 is this a simple DIY or should I take her in to the mechanic(I've got limited tools where I am). #2 Is there anything I should be aware of with this problem? Thank you.
Well I got no answers but dove in anyway. In short, it's a pain in the you-know-what...Contrary to popular belief you end up removing the fan through the top. You still have to take off the plastic cover underneath because you have to drain the radiator and unhook the two oil lines as well as the large radiator hose. Once that's done you move to the top and proceed to remove all the harnesses and hoses that connect to the fans and radiator. Then you remove the 4 bolts that hold the radiator in place(DO NOT REMOVE THE 4 SCREWS THAT HOLD THE FAN SHROUD TO THE RADIATOR). Now you can finally jostle the radiator and fan shroud out in one piece. My auxiliary fan was toasted on the inside. I replaced the shroud with a new set of fans and cleaned out the radiator while at it. I put everything back, filled up the radiator with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water and cranked it up. Run fine now and the A/C works the way it should. Good luck and I hope this helps.
