Temp gauge to mid liine

Post by asedwards »

Ok, I have an odd question. My 1998 V70 temperature gauge immediately moves to the middle upon start up. What could be the reason?

2 weeks ago, the temp would only move if the car was stopped and the engine was running. As soon as I moved temp would drop down. So a little over a week ago the radiator fan would stay on after I shut the car down. Sometimes a few minutes, sometimes longer. Last friday the fan running drained the battery. I left it running to recharge the battery but I had unplugged the fan. (Not good) Steam through the cabin but just thought the fluid was evaporated. tSaturday I changed the thermostat and temp control next to it. Put fluid in and didnt realize how much fluid it should take, While on the 3 gallon I decided to google it. Only needs 2.1 or so.! So I look in the car and sure enough fluid on the floorboards. After ripping apart the dash I figured it was coming froom behing the radio. After searching the forums I find out it was my heater core. Get one shipped anda few hours later its in and things are running smoothly. Except the temp gauge is screwed up. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

Yes. My daughter over heated her car and it went bad. Installed a new one from FCP and 3 weeks later it went bad. Got one from the jy for $3 and it's been fine since.

I jst replaced that but the overheating may have compromised it and I should change it again. I will try that. Thanks Rspi.

Before you replace it, grab a voltmeter and test the resistance of the sensor on a cold engine. Search "coolant resistance" and it should turn up a table for you. I know It's been posted around the site several times.

Sometimes the wires in the plug corrode up and give incorrect values.

I realized that I changed the sensor after the overheating took place, so I will try checking resistance. I did find a table, so do I just clean out the connection , if I figure out it is bad?

If you just replaced it, the connection is likely fine. When the car was cold I checked the temperature with a obd tool and it read-37°.
