1994 Volvo 960 Wagon...Rumbling Noise?

Post by the tenor man »

I have a 1994 Volvo 960 Wagon with the 2.9 liter engine and about 139,000 miles.

In the morning when I leave for work, I get this rumbling noise from the area of the catalytic converter. It seems to be most noticeable when the car is cold. After a bit of a drive and a warm-up, the sound almost disappears and everything seems back to normal.

I replaced the exhaust from the converter back and thought that something may be loose but that seems to be in good order. I checked the transmission fluid and although not bright red, there seems to be no metal or burnt smell. I get no codes from either the engine or the transmission.

The engine runs as smooth as silk once it has warmed up a bit and the transmission seems to shift fine in Economy and Sport modes.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I thought it may be an engine mount. These are the hydraulic type.

I had a helper sit in the car with the brake on and put it into drive and reverse. There is some deflection of the engine.

The question that I have is: How much deflection should I expect?

Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated!

I had a similar problem in my 93 and it turned out to be the driveshaft bushing/mount. it was not too expensive to repair, but I did not DIY it that time. Eeuroparts has the piece for about $140 if I recall.

I'm still trying to figure out the rumbling sound and I think that I may have the answer...the torque converter...

It's been getting worse since I last posted. When I put the transmission on the Winter Mode, it is really pronounced...

I've read about a lock-up solenoid but I don't have any idea where to start. I'm still getting no codes.

Would a flush and fill be worth the time and energy or should I just try a transmission shop?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated and thanks!

Just a little note about the rumbling noise....

It was the transmission mount...an easy and quick fix...

I hope this helps someone else with the same problems...

Many thanks to all who helped!
