2 questions about 242 DL

Post by charlieruss »

I just bought a 1980 242 DL with 120k miles on it.
2 questions:

1)When idling the car shakes, looking at the engine when it is running shows that the engine itself is shaking around a lot, I'm assuming this is due to needing engine mounts replaced? If so, from what I've read this should be a fairly quick procedure if I take it to a mechanic, I doubt I could do it myself. Just so I don't get ripped off, does anyone have any clue about how much/how long replacing engine mounts would take?

2)the woman who owned the car before me was very short and it seems that she had the drivers seat moved very far forward, i think she had the tracks modified b/c I tried to move it back as far as it would go and It's still very far forward, much more than the passenger seat. Can i remove the seat and fix this easily? Anyone have any idea?

Thanks.

If I remember correctly there are 4 bolts that hold the seat in and 1 electrical connection for the ass warmer.

Before you replace the motor mounts run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through the gas tank. If that does not do it you might need to replace the o rings around the injectors (they come in a kit with the plastic end caps) I think it is around $4 for each injector. This made a world of difference in my wifes volvo so I did mine too. It had no effect either good or bad on mine.

Thanks for replying. I got fuel injector cleaner which i'm going to put in next time I fill up my tank, i also noticed a small vaccum hose was cracked so i replaced that, though the idle is still just as rough.
As for the seat though i took it apart and inspected the rails underneath. it looks like they should be able to go back further but for some reason are getting stuck...has anyone ever encountered this problem? its not the end of the world but I have to sit kind of awkwardly close to the steering wheel, i'm 6 feet which isnt huge but i'm a little cramped.
