2001 S80 Rear Strut Replacement

VADIS instructed to install tooling 9997079 to secure the spring prior to perform rear shock absorber replacement.

Is this neccessary? will the car get damaged or injured myself if the spring is not secured?
If this is a must do step, where do I install the tooling to secure the spring?
Can I substitute it (9997079)with other tooling as I don't have this volvo specialy tooling.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.
