While driving at about 50mph, my car shut off and I have not been able to start it since. It seems to crank easily. Initially I thought fuel pump, but was wondering if the o2 sensor will prevent the car from starting complete. I do not hear my fuel pump when cranking...was wondering if they are very quiet or if I should be able to hear it. Near the schrader valve I heard what sounded like an electric motor for a bit after turning the ignition off. I should mention that this happened about a week ago, but after a half hour it started again.
I recently, about 6 months ago, replaced the MAF sensor as well as new starter. Any help would be appreciated as I cannot afford to get this towed and repaird...need to be able to do it myself where it sits...at a nice farmers front yard parking area.
thanks!!
Jim

What you are hearing under the hood after the key is off, and even before you crank the car, is the idle air control valve.
If you cannot hear the fuel pump with the right rear seat folded down then I suspect either a bad fuel pump or a bad fuel pump relay. Check for pressure at the Schrader valve with the key on. You can actually use a cheap tire gauge to do this and you are looking for around 38 PSI. Since tire gauges weren't really made to check fuel pressure they are not accurate but a positive pressure reading above around 15 psi will mean that the fuel pump is working.
If you have no pressure remove the upper cover to the fuse box and locate relay number 103. That is the fuel pump relay. On the bottom of the relay you should be able to locate the numbers 15 and 87. Use a piece of wire or even a paper clip to jumper between the 15 and 87 socket positions and check for fuel pressure again. If the pressure reads good then the relay is bad. You should be able to start the car at this point to make sure.
If you still have no pressure then the fuel pump itself is likely bad.
A bad O2 sensor will not prevent the car from starting.

thank you Lee. I will try the paperclip in a few hours and will report back. Hope it is as simple as a relay. I assume you just bend the paperclip in half and stick it in the sockets marked 15 and 87? I have not done this before.

The sockets won't be marked with the number but the numbers are molded into the base of the relay. There are only 4 terminals on the relay (5 on some but they are few and far between).
At any rate, pins 15 and 87 are 90 degrees opposed in orientation and the pins are directly across from each other. It will be obvious once you get there.

OK Just tried it out. Still would only turn over. I took the fuel pump cover off in the trunk area and will go buy a new pump. It appears that the cover has never been off, so this fuel pump is at 185,000 miles....probably was time to go anyway.

Also...I am buying and Airtex fuel pump from Advance Auto Parts....$129. Says it is an exact fit. Bosch is over $300. Looks pretty much the same. Hoping it will work; one reviewer said it worked fine for him.
