02 XC70: No luck forcing the sunshade closed Topic is solved

I have a 2002 XC 70, sunroof works perfectly but the shade is jammed up. I read (elsewhere) that I could force the sunshade shut while the sunroof is open, and then replace the guides and springs, which I have purchased. No luck forcing the sunshade closed, though. Is this the wrong approach, or do I merely need someone stronger?

Truly not sure what you are referring to.

Is the interior sunshade stuck back and open and not moving when the glass sunrook panel slides back and forth?

No, it was moving then- we just ended up removing the glass and replacing two guides- works nicely again!

Hi, I appear to be having the same problem, however could some instructions be posted on how to do this.

My sunroof works fine, however the shade won't close, it's stuck currently in the open and if I try to bring it into closed, there is an awful noise as I force it shut. I also thought I had seen where the glass part is to be flush with the top of car, mine is not, just a bit sunk down.

I have never attempted anything more than replacing a headlight on this car...is this something I could try and should I take to a specialist/dealer.

It's not too hard if you just go slow and take your time. Place a rag down and put all of the bolts that came off at the same time together.

1. Tilt the sunroof to the vent position.
2. Remove the black plastic accordian covers from the sun roof. Pull from the top gently, they pop right off.
3. This will uncover 4 T-25 torx bolts. Remove these and the glass will come right out, Pull the glass, and set it aside somewhere SAFE. This glass is like 800 bucks at the dealer.
4. On the outside of the vehicle, you'll see the exposed rails now. On the side (like looking from the side of the car) you will see 1 T-25 torx bolt for each side of the car, 1 driver, 1 passenger. Remove these and take the small black arm off of the rail. It will just fall to the side of the rails, it's ok there.
5. You will see a cross piece now that is held in by 4 torx screws. Slide it forward a bit gently and remove these screws. Twist up and remove this cross piece.
6. You should see the guides now on the sun shade. They are springs that go into the rail. gently remove the front 2 guides and slide the shade forward. This will uncover the rear guides. Remove those, and the shade comes out of the car.
7. The springs are held in by a small phillips head screw. just remove the screw carefully and out they come. You local dealer should have them, or at least be able to get them. They are not expensive. Full price is probably 10 bucks each.

The car can be driven without the sun shade if need be, just reinstall everything but the shade and you're good to go.

Re install the same way.

Just go SLOW and do not over tighten anything in there, especially the 4 T-25's that go into the plastic rail.

I also found a way to (mostly) remove one when you cant raise the motor. I could post pics and info later, as it was helpful when taking one apart at the auto yard.

I removed the sunshade on my 2006 S60 last week and I took some nice pictures I could share with you. I will mention which item in asc325is's list it is.

#4 After you remove the glass you have to undo these two screws (each side one screw)

#5 slide forward the cross piece so it looks like this

#5 And remove the four screws

You should be able to remove the rear spring clips and remove the sunshade now. If you want to drive without the sunshade be sure to put pack the cross piece so no water end up on your seats (ask me how I know it) and put back the two latches with screws.

I’m encountering a similar issue. Need to replace one guide clip.

Instructions seem straightforward.. but, is there any risk that the alignment of the glass will be off when reinstalled - ie can this fix end up being more trouble than it’s worth?
