Ok I need help to see if I should proceed replacing parts or will I need a HG job or head job.. I posted on VS.. so if you check the link my whole story is there. (volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/156741-timing-belt-trouble-please-help/page__fromsearch__1)
I have every thing torn down except turbo stuff.. need help determining the following:
Why would the motor turn and sound as if it's the starter spinning only.. I verified the motor is turning over it just sounds scary..
How can I tell if the HG is gone.. I dnt have the compression tester currently.. any other ways? Has a blown HG ever been known to leak right out of the head when water/coolant is added to the expansion tank.. it literally runs out between the motor and trans somewhat near the turbos.. It looks to be a metal pipe tht runs the length of the block..??
How bad is the HG job.. ?? Special tools needed???
Any help is appreciated

Thanks to all that replied with input and advice.. Just finished taking my heat shields off to see what is leaking.. the head gasket blew out in the back.. water leaks right out between the head and block... so no compression on a few cylinders is the reason the motor turns and sounds weird..
Does anyone have a write up or pdf with the procedure for a HG r&r??
I'm running a search for it..but any help is appreciated.. thanks

Man that sounds ugly. You said that the compression was low, did you test the compression or do a leakdown?
There is a series of coolant pipes between the motor and bulkhead that can leak, hopefully that's all it is. Do a compression and or leakdown test before going any further. I would have said do a cooling system pressure test but of course you would need to re attached the coolant lines to the turbos to do this!
Biggest PITA of the head is getting the camshaft sprockets back on the cams lined up correctly and setting the VVT. There are no locating lugs or drive keys. You lock the cams at the rear of the motor (you can make a tool for this), pop the sprockets on, the torque center bolt to 88ft lbs. I think the sprockets might have to come off in order for you to be able to remove the cam cover and get at the head bolts.
I have a thread somewhere here that has lots of pictures of the head job I did a couple of years ago.

Thanks Boosted for the response... so would the "bulkhead" be the main coolant line in the rear of the block or should I say near, that connects to turbo lines and the block/head?? I did not disconnect any of the coolant system except the overflow want.. but the radiator has a 1 inch crack..
I would realy feel more confident on the job I must diy soon with a full detail set of procedures so I'll look for your post.would his take needs from start to finish?? Particularly the vvt timing setup and making a cam loc k tool??
Thx again

The S80 has a horrible rep for reliability but its mostly down to electronic issues and a transmission that just isnt up to the job of the T6 motor. Mechanically the motors are pretty stout.
When I say bulkhead, I mean passenger compartment. So the exhaust side of the motor. You have a lot of cooling pipes back there. To be honest I think I'd put the coolant lines back on the turbos, fill the system and pressure test it before pulling anything apart.

Thanks again Boosted... The coolant system is still intact turbos and all. I was thinking the leak was one of the various lines back there, but i can actually place my hand where the block and head meet near the center, pour water in the coolant tank and I can feel the water run out as well see it leaking all over the coolant lines. when I get back home Ill try a pressure test on the coolant system. Has anyone ever had a HG blow so bad it leaks as soon as the water reaches the water jacket?? Thats what I think is the oddest part of this..
