Timing Belt Replacement: Exhaust Cam rolled forward

Post by dbjamin »

After getting every thing lined up (exhaust/intake/crankshaft markings), I pulled off the old timing belt, replaced the tensioner and idler, felt good to go. When I checked the markings again, I noticed the Exhaust Cam had rolled forward (clock-wise), leaving it no longer in alignment.

Intake and Camshaft are still in alignment.

How do I get the Exhaust Cam back into alignment?

Thanks.
Ben

Remove the tensioner and TB.
Re-align the whole thing.

Belt is off.
Do I roll the Exhaust cam backwards into alignment with out moving the Intake?
Thanks, Ben

Assuming it is off by just a tooth or two, you should be able to roll it back into position. When snugging up the belt, keep an eye on the cams as you pull the slack to make sure nothing moves.
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Mine also moved while changing the TB. Just set it back in place and, after the belt is back on, turn it by hand a time or two and make sure everything is lined up.

Thanks. Much appreciated.

Rolled it back into place. (Next time I'll remove a spark plug to relieve pressure).

Test drive:
At low speeds all seems fine.
High speed (45mph, uphill), engine shudders
Throws P0301, P0445.

Suggestions? Obviously, I didn't get it right.(grrr)
Thanks, Ben

Check the marks, if the cams line up (also the crank), the timing is not the issue. The code P0301 is a #1 misfire. When was the last tuneup?

The P0455 code is from the evaporative emissions control system, which wouldn't be affected by the timing or timing belt work.

There is a good summary of potential causes of the P0455 here:
