...however, the photos only show the top of the pump insert, and not how anything goes together at the bottom of the assembly, including the check valve.

The main trick is to re-connect everything just like it was before,only with a new insert(pump).You can't go wrong on this.You should take a picture of the connections & connectors from your old insert(pump) and just hand it over onto the new pump.

There could be some minor modifications about inserting a new pump into the old housing,but...generally everything should be connected & matched like it was with the old pump,and that's the whole story.

I thought I got it back together exactly like it was, which is why this is so puzzling, and why a diagram and/or pictures would be helpful so I could double check it to see if I did in fact get it right. I have taken it apart twice (once when I replaced the original insert missing the metal cap, and again to check it again), and I might try it again this weekend (if so, I'll take photos). Thanks
