The link is broken or unavailable. Does anyone know what this item is that they speak of? And is it something that needs to be installed by a dealer or other professional or is it something that someone (my boyfriend and resident car repairer) with 13 years of mechanic experience could do at home? Any information is helpful, as my car seems to be stalling a little bit. Basically it wont turn over (the engine) when I turn it to "III". It happened to me today, twice, would start, and then instantly turn off, but all the electronic items were still functioning (radio lights etc), Also, when I slow to a stop when driving around town the RPMs drop down to about 500. To me, it feels like the car wants to turn off, but my boyfriend told me its just how the car idles (I was driving a Chevy before and he explained to me that the cars handle and drive differently and that I just need to get used to it). I am changing the spark plugs this weekend, and just ordered a new fuel filter, hopefully these two items will solve the issue that I mentioned above, but I am still nervous. I am a new Volvo owner, and I am also one with not much disposable cash to spend at a dealer getting my ETM repaired....
ETM question
ETM question
Is there a database of some kind where I can check my VIN to figure out if my car either has had an ETM repair, or if it was selected for recall/review and not brought to Volvo? I am the 3rd owner of a 99 v70 (w/ 163k miles), and I emailed the previous owner asking whether or not this issue was remedied, but just incase he does not know, I would like to know if there is anyway I can find out myself? Would Volvo be able to tell me if I contacted them? Also, on the vexedvolvo site there is an update from 2 years ago:
"January 2009 - A remanufactured part is now available to replace the egregiously designed Volvo ETM from Magneti Marelli throttle module. Briefly the new unit replaces the throttle position sensor that wears out with a Digital Angle Sensor that has no moving parts to wear out. As a result it carries a lifetime warranty. For details click here."

Click here and have a read. Your problem may be one of many issues and may not be ETM related.

With these later OBD II cars you really need a code reader. Autel MS509 etc
The ETM is the rectangular aluminium box attached to the inlet manifold with a large hose directly attached to the air cleaner.
If yours has been replaced in its life there will be a yellow sticker on the underside. (this happens when the dealer replaces it)
The XeModex ETM replace the mechanical contact area of the ETM with a non-contacting throttle sensor.
The ETM is expensive at the dealer at around $800 plus fitting. The XeModex solution costs far less and is more reliable in the long run.

Is the car a turbo model or not, the ETM on the non Turbo cars is very easy to get at and I would suggest removing the ETM from the inlet manifold to give the butterfly valve and housing a good clean with carb cleaner, this might free off the valve if its been sticking leading to poor idle control. If its a Turbo model then the ETM is directly under the inlet manifold and is rather more fiddly to get at - Mike
