You always know you are in trouble when your daughter comes home from school and says, "Daddy". She either needs money or her car is broken. She said it sounded like her tire was rubbing on the front left. I jacked it up and there was enough slop in the hub that the rotor was rubbing up against caliper bracket.

I've seen some bad hubs but this one took the cake, it came out in two pieces:

Her strut was also shot as was the spring seat so I replaced the strut with a decent used one and put on a new spring seat.

The '98 S70 T5 is a happy camper now.

Nasty!! I've never seen anything like that either. Any ideas on what would cause it?

My bad hub came apart like that as well. I believe mine was from having tires rotated and 2 loose lug nuts causing the tire to wobble around.

That is a very good question. The cars shows around 144k on the clock but I noticed that there was the typical yellow junk yard lettering on the strut and it is my guess that the entire left front suspension came out of a wrecked car. The car shows obvious signs of front end damage that had been repaired by non professional body shop guys, likely all with junk yard body panels and other mechanical parts as necessary.

It's good that your daughter actually listens to the car and tells you about it. It took years to "train" mine to do that.

Just curious - did you have any trouble getting the Torx bolts out of the hub? I tried to loosen mine yesterday and could not get them with a small 3/8 breaker bar. I think they are original so 14 years old. I decided to soak them again overnight with PB Blaster and try again today with a pipe extender on the breaker bar. I'm just not sure how much torque those small Torx bolt heads will take. That is kind of a tight spot to cut off the bolts.

I soaked a couple of the bolts (the ones I could get to) with PB Blaster overnight but it really didn't seem to make much difference.

My E-Torx set is also 3/8" drive but I stepped it up to 1/2" with an adapter so that I could use my 1/2 " break-over bar. That and a two foot pipe snapped them loose. Once they are loose from the initial snap, which feels like thread locker, they come out very easily. My E-Torx set and the adapter are the same flat black color as impact sockets but they may or may not be that strong. I know the adapter set is genuine Pittsburgh brand from Harbor Freight. I was actually surprised at how smoothly everything went. The biggest pain in the butt was drilling out and tapping the holes for the ABS line retainer on the used strut, the old bolts snapped off when I removed the strut from the '94 850.

I believe your daughter should get a MVS contributor tag for that!
It's a real shame that these babies don't go up in value like guitars do because they sure seem vintage and worthy of respect for craftsmanship until something like that breaks. Then they can leave you singin the blues.

I got my control arms and hubs off today. I used a 30" pipe on a 1/2" breaker bar to a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter to the Torx on the hub bolts. That worked fine, I was just worried they would round off, but those little Torx heads are very strong. I got one wheel back together and the other mostly done except putting in the new hub.
