My 240 has 200K miles. I have read several posts on why the front crankshaft seal leaks. I have checked the crankcase vacuum so I do not believe it is leaking due to pressure build up.
I replaced the leaking seal about 2 weeks ago and it started leaking immediately again. I may not have inserted it far enough into the casing. I basically made it flush with the outside. In the book it said 1.5 cm. I think I have seen on this forum 3mm.
My plan today is to go back in and tap the seal further into the casing. However, would it hurt or help to tap it in a little further and put another one in front of it. Is there any harm is a double seal?
Do you think just tapping the current (new) seal a little further it would solve the problem?
Thanks,
Bill

I have checked my books and none of them give a measurement for the depth that seal should sit.
This comes from a Volvo Cars publication:
If I were doing this I would go with the 3mm which is a measurement I have heard before but have never seen in any publication.

Bill,
If I may offer some info concerning the 1.5 cm (or 15mm) as compared to the 3mm inset. I was searching for alternative suppliers for the seal and found one that suggested setting the new seal 3mm deeper than the old seal to ensure the seal runs on a part of the shaft that hasn't been grooved. Since my original instruction said to insert the seal 1.5 cm deep could it be that 1.5 is the original position?
Also, what about the idea of double sealing the crankshaft? Would there be anything wrong with doing that?
Thanks again and as always.

Well, I figured out why you don't put 2 front crankshaft seals in a 240 B230 engine. There is not enough room for 2. Looks like Bill is exactly right on 3mm depth for the seal. Please forgive me, Guru, for questioning your wisdom. ;>)

Bill,
Apologies for not answering your earlier question but I have been very busy with family and friend's jobs. That is one downside of being retired - everybody thinks you should stay active to prolong your life!!!
