2002 c70. crankshaft seal
Hi thank you for all help with my previous problems they were helpful and now fixed. Unfortunately now my crankshaft seal is leaking and can use some help with it. I'm not sure if I need any special tool's for it and I'm not sure if I can do it. I was going to order the timing belt kit from fcp it has cam seals, water pump, and pully's I don't know if it's a good product it's not from Volvo. Also I was going to order the pcv system as well it said it was from Volvo. I feel I need the pcv because it started to whistles at start up for a few second's and probably needs it. Thank you for reading and help.

The front seal is called the oil pump seal and I would go ahead and buy the entire oil pump kit that includes the O ring and gasket as well as the seal. It is somewhat unusual for the front seal to leak but it can happen.

Thanks. From what I can see when it's running there is a steady oil leak from what I referred to as crank seal I haven't removed cover and ran yet but I did remove cover to clean it wasn't too oily and the belt had light oil not soaking like the underside of car. How hard is it to repair and do I need any special tools or any thing to look out for when doing?

The only real trick is getting the nut broken loose on the harmonic balancer without turning the crankshaft. Remove the nut before you remove the timing belt so that if it does turn you are turning everything together. I use an impact wrench to get the nut off and I can usually do it without moving the crankshaft very much.
Volvo makes a special tool that bolts onto the harmonic balancer to lock it into place but it is fairly high dollar. One other method is to use the crankshaft locking tool that comes with some of the camshaft adjustment tools but that requires removing the starter. You will need a camshaft adjustment tool to change the camshaft seals since your car has CVVT and the CVVT hubs are not keyed to the camshaft.

If it is a slow leak, live with it until you have to do the timing belt.
However, if you want to tackle it:
- Believe it or not, the TB kit from Volvo (TB, idler and mechanical tensioner pulley for your 2002 model) is cheaper at Volvo dealer. It is about $120, and it is Volvo OEM Blue Box stuff.
Search for proper procedure on how to set the mechanical tensioner (basically at 20C, it is within the "windows).
- Oil Pump Seal: since this job requires a lot of labor, use the Volvo OEM seals only, it costs a little more but it lasts a long time. Detail in the post below:

As Lee said above, use the kit, Volvo PN 274260, about $22 at dealer.

Thing is when that seal starts leaking it sprays the engine bay pretty good. It is indeed rare that they fail but mine did. Ordered the kit with the new gasket and oring, make sure u get the right one there are two types of gaskets.
