Check engine light and choking 1996 960

Post by davolvo »

Hello, my car is due for an emissions check this month and my check engine light came on with the diagnosis being "fuel enriched." Every time I put gas in it whether it be a full tank, quarter tank, half tank; Shell, Mobile, Thortons, BP it chokes out for the first 10 miles or so. I am beginning to smell fuel through the air vents. Any ideas? Is there a way to reset the check engine light or wouldn't it matter at this point? Thanks for your input. The proud owner of a 1996, 960.

I assume you had someone read the trouble codes. What was the code that came out?

The only way to reset the CEL is by use of a code reader. Sometimes erasing the codes will solve the problem as they have been set by a minor glitch in the system.

Many repair shops will read the codes without charge but will not erase them until they have done the necessary repair work.

It may pay you to buy a not too expensive code reader which will allow you to read and erase your codes.

A battery reset by shorting positive lead to negative may allow the engine computer to obtain baseline settings. It may be worth a try.

Wow, I don't know exactly what worked but my check engine light went off. I disconnected the battery, cleaned the air filter and switched out my gas cap and thankfully, no more check engine light. Thank you everyone for your valuable input in this dilema I had. 8)

When a car solves its own problems don't question it! :P
