...when installing the rebuild axle?

It is original, and appears aged, and discolored, I will post photos later today.
Could it be cleaned, restored like a shoeshine if not damaged?

If mine have been in place for more than around 50k miles I just go ahead and change them. They are relatively cheap and they are very easy when the axle(s) are removed.

I did. One didn't want to come out, but I used pliers with a tooth and bent the seal out. No style points given, but it's out.

Last time I changed one I used a long, thick-shank screwdriver; laid it across the seal, tip under the seal ring on one side and pried it out by pushing the screwdriver against the other side of the seal. It resisted but eventually came out.
Next time, I will use a 2 foot crow bar (gently, of course), to get leverage so I can control the pop out more easily.

Use sheet metal screws. I posted the trick in rear cam seal DIY.

I'd get the seal from Volvo dealer.
A good alternative is SKF seal.
This is a job you don't want to do again if you get a leak from some cheap after market seals.

I found this Volvo P/N 6843112. Is this correct?
It appears to take two, one for each side.
I will also call local Carquest for SKF.

Yes, Volvo 6843112 is the Auto Trans seal.
You need qty = 2 (1 on each side).

Volvo OEM is about $22/each.

SKF is 15737, check to be sure, about $12/each.

IMHO, if not sure, stick to Volvo seals.

Replacing with Volvo seal would ensure Raxles' rebuild is closer to CPO standard.

To remove the old seal, use the sheet metal screws trick as mentioned in this REAR Cam seal DIY:

To install new seal:
- Make sure the "garter spring" goes inside.
- Use appropriate socket (or plumbing PVC coupler) to drive it in. Wet the seal with small amount of oil first.

PS: I understand your car is on jackstand waiting for Raxles.
Don't leave the trans output holes open too long, you never know bugs, flies etc. crawl inside the trans.
Debris, dirt is the #1 enemy of any trans.
Just use masking tape to tape the opening for now.
