Headlight failure

This is the first I've read of ballast controlled headlights. What a crappy idea, this is tech for tech's sake with little added benefit that I can see. The regular (!) HID super whites etc H7 types seem plenty good enough. Even $160.00 for a ballast is ridiculous. Is it a safe bet to say Volvo isn't the only one caught up in the tech race? The more and more I think about what I drive and what I want to drive, the more backwards I feel like going. 6 cyl, 3-speed Mustang w/roll-up windows. I'll settle for a good running PV544 though.
