Service Light at start up. Stays on for 5min. 232 code

Post by leighryan »

Hello All,

I have a 1992 volvo 240 with 230,000 miles. It is running pretty well but I get a service indicator light upon start up. I drive for five minutes or let it idle a while, the car warms up and the light goes out. I ran the code and got a 232. According to the manual that is a "fuel system compensating for rich or lean mixture at idle" fault. Some friends have suggested I have a bad o2 sensor. Would I get a 212 fault it this was the case. Not sure when the 02 sensor was last replaced. Is this a good place to start. Air filter is in good shape and I cleaned the Air Mas Meter not to long ago. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Leigh

To which light are you referring - "Check Engine" or "Service"?

The Check Engine light would indicate that fault codes have been set and probably would not go out after the car warms up.

The Service light will come on at approximately 10,000 mile (16,000 km) intervals. It is a reminder to the driver that the 10,000 mile (16,000 km) service interval has been exceeded. The light will stay on 2 minutes after starting until it is reset.

If it is the Service light the attached shows how to reset it:

The code 2-3-2 indicates Lambda adjustment, the Lambda sensor being the O2 sensor. The first steps to take on tracing the fault are to check the intake manifold for leaks and check the fuel pressure. That is what the book says. However, my first step with codes like this is to erase the code and drive the vehicle to see if it returns.

Thanks Bill,

It is the "service light" so I will reset it. Thanks for the link. I'll try and reset the codes and see if that 232 goes away. I will let you know.
