These are recent Youtube videos of 99 S70GLT coolant leak diagnosis and
head replacement.

I thought they were well done and worth the time. He has 3 videos so far,
20 min each, and there should be a 4th for the head re-install.

For not being a guy that specializes in Volvos he is doing OK. I notice that he left off anything about getting the ETM free from the intake line and I was groaning a bit when he fully removed the lower bolts on the intake manifold but that is just from experience.

The videos are well worth the time to watch. I am looking forward to the re-installation video and setting the pre-load on the CVVT.

Valve stem seals can be replaced with the head on the block. You have to remove the cam cover, pull the cams, remove the lifters, then use a special compression tool to compress the valves springs, release the keepers, then pull the seals. A time consuming back breaking job but at least you don't have to crack the head gasket.

I seen the DIY thread on VolvoSpeed.com I believe.

Crap, maybe I should have taken lessions from him. I pulled the battery, air box, and all kinds of stuff when I pulled my head. :?

OK -- I'll bite. If the valve stem seals can be replaced without removing the head entirely, then presumably a burned exhaust value can also be replaced without pulling the head, correct?

I'm asking since I currently have no compression in cyl. #3 in my '98 V70 and in lieu of a viking funeral, I'd like to try to replace the burned valve. This is a used engine with c. 69,000 miles on it which I had installed this past Spring.

Shop labor rates are prohibitive, so I'm tackling this as a DIY. It will be the most ambitious job I've done so far, and will have my brother's assistance. We recently did two complete PCV system replacements and have done axles, struts, innumerable brake jobs, etc., but I've never done a timing belt job and have never cracked into a motor.

Any mandatory reading/video watching before we dig in? Any advice?

Thanks cn90. I've seen the Tracy's material and thought it looked pretty good. I am hoping to do a much more surgical strike and just get in with the cams out and replace seals and perhaps one burnt valve or a broken spring. Hoping to do same in situ w/o removing the bottom portion of the head and thereby avoiding the entire head gasket aspect of things. To me, assuming that is all that is needed, it seems like a much more time efficient/cost effective approach.
