What have you done to your Volvo this week?

Post by obayha »

I thought, instead of ranting on other people's post about the good and bad that go along with owning an older car, I would put it out there in it's own thread for everyone.
I finally finished installing my heater core this weekend and no leaks no runs and no errors. YEA!!
No pictures because the heater core didn't look pretty, but all-in-all the job had a happy ending. .
For ease of install, I did take out the drivers seat, forgot my wife was the last one to drive it, and didn't hook up the power seat buttons when I put it back in. Needless to say, I was a little cramped driving to work this morning. Raining outside, so couldn't get out and hook anything up.
More things to come in the following weeks, seats, trim, door panels and door locks.
What have you done to your Volvo this week?

I'm trying to get as much done as possible before the snow starts to fly.

'94 850

Replaced brake pads on all 4 corners.
Turned front rotors.
Changed oil and filter.
Flushed power steering fluid.
Compression test on Cylinder #1 30 PSI Dry - 40 PSI Wet.
Borescoped cylinders - #1 cylinder walls look OK
Marvel Mystery Oil in all cylinders for 2 days.
Sounds like it runs much smoother.

'99 XC

Re-timed camshafts and properly set CVVT preload.
Repaired right front door lock switch.
Traced fault on left rear window.
Ordered window motor.
Repaired right rear seat belt.
Made temporary repair to right rear seat latch - the chucklehead I bought the car from used a Sawzall to cut the latch brace and tore the crap out of the C pillar trim.
Ordered door panel retainer clips and some small misc. trim pieces.
Replaced right side spring seat.

Pulled the engine out of the 98 XC and then removed the crankshaft and polished the rear main seal surface, Packed the rear prop shaft CV's , replaced front trans (torque converter) seal, and then put it all together.
Oh and I also installed brand new rear calipers with pads and flushed whole brake system.

"new" 2004 V70R got frozen tie rod adjuster jam nut cracked off and replaced and then the toe was set to correct specs with steering wheel centered. Also did trans fluid change, angle gear change, inspected plugs and found them new as well as all new coils already installed recently. Knocked the silly grate out of oil filler (I'm not going to leave oil cap off so the fire protection is moot) so I can see and so the oil goes in as fast as it comes out of jug. Replaced whole rear tail light set with 2005-2007 style I got from local CL for CHEAP (one man's garage clutter is another's new tail lights with factory LED side markers).

On the horizon: Install the ordered larger bore down pipe after I cut and weld in the new catalyst I ordered with mid-body O2 sensor. The already made with adequate catalyst are too much $ and this high flow DP with high flow correct catalyst is cheaper than aftermarket stock. After a little welding that is.

replaced the steering wheel cowling, installed a door striker, ran a can of sea foam directly into my intake manifold via a vacuum hose. Installed an aftermarket stereo with a microphone for handsfree phone use. refilled the oil and did a compression test.

Passenger seat out waiting on new (to me) skins. Odd driving with no seat beside you. A lot more storage room.
I can do in two months, what it takes a normal person to do in an hour.
