How can a valve be replaced if the head is on the motor? I can't see how that's possible.

The Valves are in the bottom portion of the cylinder head.E Showell wrote:Thanks cn90. I've seen the Tracy's material and thought it looked pretty good. Yes, the valves poke into the bottom of the head, that's how they make contact with the pistons when you loose a timing belt part.
Here is a direct strike I did with a head removal. Once you get the head off you will need a valve compression tool to compress the valve spring (from the top), remove the valve spring keepers, which will let the valve slide out of the head. A lot of shops will replace all the seals, relap the other valves and clean up the head between $175 - $325, you can call and ask them and they will tell you the cost. As you can see from the video above, it's a lot of work.

No smoke at any time. Always used Mann oil filters. Did own changes with Mobil 1. Front O2 sensor failed and probably had not been changed in 175K miles. Running 87 octane.

I think he could have just used the timing belt change procedure (rotate 90 degrees past the marks and then back CCW to the marks) to set up the cam timing if he hadn't loosened the exhaust cam sprocket. Since he didn't loosen the CVVT hub he wound up doing a partial portion of the full procedure that is used if the hub has been removed.
All and all a good job even though I'm not a real fan of the copper spray.
