Oil Filter Cartridge Collapse...Pressure Regulator Issue

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Oil Filter Cartridge Collapse...Pressure Regulator Issue

Post by boosted5cyl »

Took this filter out of the car today, it has about 700miles on it and its starting to collapse on the outside. I cant remember the make, but anyway, this has happened with almost every filter ive had in this car so far.
Where is the oil pressure regulator and how and I check it?

The only form of regulation for the oil supply I know of is the check spring in the rear of the oil pump.

It just looks like deformation of the paper element. There's no hole blown through it or anything, is there?

I agree. I have a few different vehicles and tractors with cartridge filters and I see slight distortion like that using OEM filters or aftermarket on every one of them. I have used some aftermarket filters that have a plastic frame in core of filter and those do not deform but I can't remember what brand and it was on a Ford diesel engine.
A plugged oil filter will collapse inward (some have reverse flow and collapse outward, not on the Volvos) but there is an overpressure valve as oil filters will have some bypassing oil at high revs even when filter is not obstructed.
The amount of distortion in your photo would not concern me.

Thanks for chiming in. I think what concerned me is the short amount of time\mileage it's been in there. I'll change it anyway, since I have a new one.. Good to know it's not too much of a cause for concern.

The colapse in the picture seems more likely to have occurred due to axial force applied to the cartridge rather than from excessive oil pressure (pushed in too far too quickly during install, maybe)?
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

True I might just be over-tightening the cover.... Well we'll see how this goes.
