I have a 1999 volvo s70 t5. It has a cartridge type oil filter.
Every time I have changed the oil(three times now), I have found the oil filter crushed.
Considering how stiff the oil filters are and the fact that I've screwed the oil filter housing with a new filter on, off, and on again because I always forget to change the O-ring the first time, means that it should be the excessive restriction.
The oil filter sits above the housing a measly mm or so, causing there to be a VERY small ring gap through which the oil can be pulled through. As I am not really impressed with the engineering of other things such as the parking brakes, radiator, etc. I'm not expecting it to be perfect, but it doesn't seem right for something so important to be designed this poorly. I even chamfered and shaved as much as I could around the filter's plastic top as I could with a knife without cutting the filter itself. And even after that, it still runs and sounds as if it is half starved of oil. I am using the recommended cartridge type filter. Just happen to use Fram because my Dad always has for his vehicles. Does anyone have suggestions, have this problem yourself and maybe have solutions, think the oil filter should be sort of conical rather than cylindrical(which would solve the problem, just not as easy to manufacture, I know), or know a better oil filter for me to use?
I only ever see the cylindrical plastic plated(and sometimes without) filters when I look up 1999 s70 cartridge-type filters...
Cartridge-type Oil filter collapses.

I would try a Mahle, Mann, or Wix filter and see if the problems persist.
Fram filters are not known to be the best quality. I have heard that some of their product lines have improved in recent years but I would not be surprised if your issue was ultimately linked to the Fram filter.

I would also recommend the same brands as previous other. I usually go with WIX since I believe it's made in the USA.
Edit: I would personally drive way longer than 3k miles before an oil change.

I would drive 5,000+ before changing it, even though it's a turbo car, but it develops non-injector, rpm dependent clicking that gets worse until I change the oil. Local auto care places largely sell Fram, so it is the easiest to get(and supports local businesses). I will look around for a different brand filter. I wonder if the Fram(and some other) filter/s has/have too large of a diameter, and some other brands have a smaller diameter so that there is less restriction(albeit less surface area means they wouldn't filter as well for as long and would clog easier...).
My Dad has noted the oil seems quite black twice in a row now. My car also will hiccup sometimes when pulling to highway speed in 2nd around 2,600 rpm. Not sure if that is oil filter or a soft intercooler outlet turbo hose problem.slickdizzy wrote: ↑14 Oct 2020, 09:23 I would try a Mahle, Mann, or Wix filter and see if the problems persist.

I used fram on my 850 turbo on 2 occasions. Both times the oil did not look normal. I never used fram again and never had a problem since.

Noted. I'll have to change my oil again at 100 miles or so and before the winter sets in. Another 60 bucks worth of oil and different filter a little too soon is worth it if it might fix the problem, prevent me having to freeze my butt off trying to change it mid-winter, or worse, having to tear the engine apart because of a shot 'rod bearing or something.
