What would cause this? Exhaust valve
What would cause this? Exhaust valve #2 cylinder. 2002 V40 1.9L turbo. Only 116k miles. All regular maintenance done on time. Mobil 1 synthetic since new. Thanks.

detonation in the cylinder
caused by hot spot on valve, low octane gas, inoperative knock sensor, oxygen sensors not changed at proper interval, inaccurate MAF (dirty), inaccurate coolant temp sensor,improper coolant ability to transfer heat,improper spark plug or boost regulated without proper computer control.

Also: deposit build up on valve face from short trips and/or slow driving. The hardened valves used do the odd burned away failure. Older valves would have a small spot but these hardened valves look like a cutting torch attacked the valve.
