Wobble in front end 1998 v70 front wheel drive

Post by opgpc0 »

Hello
First I would like to start off by saying, the timing belt information was of great use. The information was spot on and of enormus value.

I own a 1998 v70 135k front wheel drive. I changed the CV rack about 5k miles ago. Just recently I noticed a wobble in the front end. I apperared to be coming from the driver side. It gave the feel/impression of a steel belt on the front tire being broken. A very slow wobble. I swapped out both front tires and the outer tie rods appear fine. Nothing noticebly wrong on the tires or control arms.No excessive play of any kind when jacked up and moved sideways or up and down. I am perplexed and now I am imaging it may be more located in the center of the car,,again not sure. Perhaps a drive shaft issue? I am scratching my head and dont know what the next path to take is. Any suggestions/ comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Again
Glen

Still have all of your wheel weights? If you hit a major pothole, you could have thrown a weight which will cause an out of balance condition which could translate to wheel wobble. Let's start with the simplest first . . .

'99 V70 NA FWD Auto, dark blue (sold)

How are your tires? I found that Volvos are very sensitive to unequally worn tires.

I recently had a front end wobble at above 65mph...bought new tires and the wobble disappeared.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Well the whole time I thought the shimmy/wobble was front end/ tire related. This morning traveling in Brooklyn the steel belt snapped tore off the right rear passenger side. Tire never went flat, just the steel belt sheered off. You guys were correct once again. I should have checked all of the tires and not just the front. Lesson learned, inexpensively. I was on the verge of changing control arms, tie rods. Like a previous poster had said earlier, check the simple things first. There is something to be said about Volvo owners.

Thanks again
Glen

What tires were you running? I had full tread separation on a Michelin Xas on Saab 96 V4 @ 70 mph. The steel belt was fully exposed. The tire still had 34 psi in it! Tires had around 60k on them with plenty of tread remaining. Nothing but Michelins since then for me.
