No start, no turnover, only a click. How to fix??

I have a 1992 240 DL (her name is Vikki) and it won't start at all. when you turn the key it only clicks. this is the third time its happened. the first time it was a switch (i can't remember the name, maybe the safety neutral switch), the second time it was the starter, now what is it??? both times its been a 500 dollar repair job. is there a way to save money and figure this out myself? please help Vikki and me out!

Have you tried measuring the voltage at the battery? How old is the battery and what kind of climate do you live in?

Also check battery connections and starter solenoid connections are clean and tight. Ensure earth strap from engine to chassis is intact and connections are clean and tight.
