Hello All,
Before anyone mentions it, I have had a trawl through the "Crank, No-start" section of this site...
On Friday my car was OK, no problems starting. On Saturday morning... Crank, No-start ! It has petrol and the pump runs.
I have tried both keys for the car... same symptom. No codes are stored for this problem... I do have two codes stored for the normal Volvo auto-box problems ( P-0740 & P-0785 ). The rev-counter shows steady cranking speed with the odd flick up to about 4000 revs while trying to start it. I swapped a couple of relays to prove them, then I pulled ECM and TCM fuses for a moment or two then replaced them... no-change. The battery appears OK but is old. Just in case, I put the battery on charge for an hour until charger showed 'done'. No-trouble cranking though.
In it's former lifetime this car had 'RUNLOCK' fitted, but appears not to have left any suspect wiring after being recovered.
Is the ignition switch immobilizer aerial the most likely suspect now, or is there a more obvious cause I have missed.

If your car is parked in a slope with the gas tank near empty you may experience this condition.

Is fuel actually flowing to the rail? water in the fuel? A faulty crank sensor?, though it seems a code should appear.

Thanks for your thoughts. It did cross my mind as there was very little petrol in the car. I put a gallon in, just in case.
Up until Saturday morning, the car always started even though I thought the battery was a bit suspect. It appears I was operating on "borrowed time".
I have changed the battery as it showed 11.8 volts standing with engine cold in the morning. While cranking, the battery read about 7.5 volts, with various warning lights on the dashboard going out that should stay on.... the central-locking was all-to-cock also... But it always started though.... Weather has been cold lately.
I presume the 7.5 volts did not give enough "headroom" for the various supplies in the ECM / TCM.... even though the engine appeared to crank normally. Hopefully this may clear a few other weird problems.
I have had the new battery for about 3 months now but could not change it due to a) the amount of stuff in the back of the car... and b) no-time to change it. Interesting to note that since September, the price of the battery has gone-up from £129 to £139, so I have saved myself £10. Luckily, I appear to have avoided the local Volvo dealer's £112 an hour labour charges.
I have reset the central-locking to get the tail-gate lock to work reliably again. I have been locked-out of the tail-gate on several occasions. There is no key-hole on the tail-gate and an aluminium plate across the inside of the tail-gate held on by screws with no slots. The only way-in is via the driver's door key, or the remote fob.
Next things to sort are the auto-box (S4 ?) cover, then the alarm-siren module.
