This is great feedback... Thanks. I double checked my transcription from the Haynes manual and found that I made an error on the "9 9 9 9".... it is indeed "9 9 9" in the manual -- I just typed it in wrong. Thanks for catching this.

Well, for whatever reason, my reader was pulling codes without fail today.
I also figured out that I was not able to get into delete mode until after pulling all of the codes (i.e. closing the switch for 6-7 seconds didn't seem to do anything until I'd circled all the way back around to the first code AND didn't turn the ignition off before attempting to delete codes ... seems like some volatile bit must be getting set).
On the other hand, the LED doesn't stay permanently lit, so I'm thinking that this was the long pause I had encountered on my first code read attempt (which happened before I finished reading the full sequence).
In any event, I did manage to delete the codes and generated a new one (rather, regenerated):

We'll be driving the car around a bit to see if anything else shows up before I end this year digging into the dash of the car.
We did notice last night that it took a very long time to defrost the windows. I'm thinking it was an air flow (warming) problem rather than a dehumidification (i.e. AC) problem since it was the windshield's exterior that was not clearing off.

After a drive-around yesterday, I re-read the codes and have a sum total of:
231 - Ventilation Damper Motor Position Sensor Circuit Open Or Shorted To Power
417 - Pass. Side Temp. Sensor Intake Fan Seized
I just lubricated the fan about a month ago, so I'll have to see what is up with that (as well as crawling under the dash).

I (in response to the 2 3 1 cited above) pulled the driver-side ventilator damper and tested that it responded to a 9V battery, then (along with generous cursing) reinstalled it.
I then tried the self-adjust and am (not surprisingly) a little confused about the following:
10) Verify the self adjustment procedure by pressing the diagnostic button 1 time for 1 second. If you get "1 1 1" flashed back, the procedure is complete.
11) If you get 5 1 1, it was not completed and should be repeated
12) If you get any other code, there is still a fault in the system that must be corrected.
Am I correct in that this is actually a set of either/or statements? That is, IF I have a code (3 2 3, for example), I would NOT get either 1 1 1 or 5 1 1 before it.
Would the 323 code be expected if I didn't get the ventilator damper motor in correctly, or should the self-adjust have taken care of that?

Just for moral support: I interpret it the same way, if you get a 323 then you presumably won't get either 111 or 511. Clear the 323 until it shows 111, then try again. If 323 pops up again then you should have to fix the cause of 323 before you can go through the self adjust.
