engine makes a groaning sound

hi guys, everytime the cars cold, first time use in the morning, the engine makes a horrible groaning sound, a constant noise for about 3-4 minutes, when its warmed up its ok, is it anything to worry about, its quite loud sometimes....

i only drive it to about 2000rpms when its warming up...

its a 2.3 T5 turbo wagon..

check your type of oil filter, and don't use a fram, there is a check valve issue that is critical to the way the oil stays at the top of your engine. there are lots of threads for you to search on the oil filter topic and various types of oil to be used, I use Mobile1 synthetic and Mobil1 filter. made a big difference for me.

My guess is it's coming from the area of the serpentine belt or timing belt. Probably one of the idlers, tensioners or the water pump. Easiest way to troubleshoot is to remove the serpentine belt and start it up cold. If it's coming fromt the timing belt area, fix it immediately.

What side is the noise coming from. Does the noise get louder if you rev the engine. Could be timing belt idler pulley,water pump,alternator or many other things. Could almost be anything. I would get it looked at right away

i again, ok this morning i went out to the car cold and filmed the engine noise, hopefully you can see and here it, is it just normal noise, or worse:(

Nice piece of work with the audio and video. Definetly a problem and definetly belt related. Remove the serp belt and restart to see if the noise goes away. My guess is that it will. I'm betting on the alternater, but could be the idler or tensioner.

You also appear to have some valve train noise. Probably getting time to do the "O" rings in the crankcase.

The valves "clacking" because there's clearance between the hydraulic lifter and the cam. A common problem is for the "O" ring between the oil pan and the block to shrink up and suck a little air rather than all oil. The "O" ring seals the oil pickup line. The air that's introduced into the oil eventually makes it's way to the top of the engine where the lifters are and causes them to partially collapse. Your's sounded a little noisy, but it make have just been amplified on the audio. If you don't notice a metallic ticking that increases in frequency with engine speed you don't have the problem. The injectors tend tomake a clicking noise, but that's not the noise I'm referring to.

i think the noise was amplified, when i played back the video at first on the tv, i thought it dosent sound as ticky as that...

I would definitely think like pfeener, noise sounds like worn bearing: alternator, idler, steering pump,....?

Checking without the S-belt is certainly the best advice.
