1995 960 blower fan problem

Post by charles aldinger »

ac/heater blower fan suddenly started making a flapping sound yesterday like something was hitting blade. it's seems fine on low (1) although the sound (which is now more like a whirr) increases as it it turned up. is it likely that it has died and, if so, what's cost of replacing a blower motor given that the darned thing is probably locked under the dashboard?

I have an '86 740 and the blower motor is notorious for taking on water, rusting and freezing up. I do not know if your 95 is situated the same way, but in my '86 is it not that hard to swap out. I would suggest that you purchase a Haynes or Chilton's Automotive Repair Manual and look at the procedure. In my '86 you take out the panel below the glove box with two or three fasteners, then take off the side panel. There is another piece of hardware holding a Bosch electrical unit to unscrew and move out of the way but it is easy. The fan sits against the wheel well. The hardest part is unscrewing the screw in the back of the fan that you cannot see, but if you get a hex wrench that is situated like a screwdriver, (I am sure there is a name for that tool) it works nicely. You may want to see what size it is by finding the right socket for one of the bolts that you can see.

I replaced the blower motor once but when my heater core leaked recently, it damaged the new one. I drilled out the rivets, opened it up, cleaned out the rust and filled the bottom cup with grease. It makes a little more noise than it did before but works nicely and I think the grease will keep the moisture from collecting and causing it to rust and bind up. Pop rivets worked fine to put it back together.

Many thanks replies on my 960 blower motor. Had it looked at and, believe it or not, a large sandwich bag had somehow been sucked into the blower fan from the front of the car while driving and was causing flapping and vibrating. It didn't, however, damage the fan or motor and, once removed, all is well
