Volvo 960, 1995, Transmission Problem

Post by Carlosp »

Hello, I have a Volvo 960 1995 3.0. My car sometimes dont engage the gears. I never had a problem with my tranny in this car, it fails sudently. When I engage D or any gear the car does not move. Sometimes it does. Looks like the car try to stars in 3rd gear. Do you think this is the PMP Switch?
A month ago I check the fluid level on my tranny It was a little low, but does not looks brown, it was red. I add more fluid but nothing seems to change. Also I perform a scan with the onboard scanner inside the engine and Im gettting ony 232 code: Spedometer Signal Missing. I also do a video on Youtube to show my problem ( link is below) Really apreciate any help.

Transmission: Automatic AW 30-40 PDF

"It is good to shift a couple of times from P to L and back to 'refresh' contact points in PNP."

I would unplug electrical connectors, and spray an electrical contact-cleaner on terminals. Also check/clean grounds

See if this attached file helps.

It may or may not be the PNP switch, but here's info for replacement

1997 S90: car back..high gear meaning sluggish start..smell..leaks

"A skilled mechanic should be able to figure out how to adjust it without the special tool. Here is a picture of how it lines up with the tool. "

"As long as the flat sides of the gear selector shaft line are parallel and line up with the mark on the sensor when the transmission is in neutral, it is lined up correctly. To verify, make sure the reverse lights come on when in reverse and go out in park and neutral. "

Thanks so much for you're quick answer and you're time. Really appreciate your help. I try a few times to shift from P to L (20 or 30 times), then restart the car and put the gear selector in D. When I do this the transmission engages correctly in 1st gear. But after a few meters driving the car, the gear disengages again. I will check the connections that you mention and see what happens.

I am not familiar with this transmission, but they say, "TCM receives input signals from various components to determine transmission shift points and torque converter lock-up."

PNP has a 313 code, but I have no idea how this is set....when transmission does not engage, move gear selector a pinch forward or backward...does it engage?

I will assume your speed sensor is the problem...a test (page 19) is explained in that PDF posted, and the pin-out is found on page 23.

"Using a DVOM, measure resistance between measuring
unit terminals No. 16 and 17."

I assume this transmission uses two speed sensors. OBD-II 30/40LE transmissions have two speed sensors on transmission...Your transmission may use the vehicle's speed sensor, plus the transmission's speed sensor, so both sensors need to be tested.

See this thread, and download the 94ABS960 file. If your vehicle's speedometer is working, then you should not have to test vehicle's speed sensor.

Disconnect the battery before doing electrical tests.

I assume the vehicle has the same transmission as cited in that PDF file.
