Just did the fix to our 97 850 there were a couple differences on the 97. There was no brass nut to remove instead there were 3 small screws that had to be removed on the back center of the board area and then you could remove the odometer assembly. the odometer did not have a wire plug it slipped on to a connecter on the main board. Other than that it wasn't that bad of a job.
It is easier if you remove the dash top completely and as others have said its just a couple more screws.

I have a 1996 850 Turbo and been trying to follow this step by step procedures for accessing the odometer gear and cluster light bulbs. According to an early posting note on removing the vents, turn it until it's facing down then it will come out easily. Unfortunately, the vents on mine will not turn all the way facing down and will not come out. I'm afraid it will break if I force it. Referring to the Haynes Repair Manual, I'm supposed to pull out the glove compartment insert first; however, the glove compartment photo on the manual does not look the same as mine. Please help.
Can't find the other end. Is it on the left or right of the foot well panel? Thanks, John

I suggest changing the bulbs in the dash. They are cheap and you don't want to have to do the job again for the sake of a couple of blown bulbs.
Also I removed the whole dash top - it's only one more torx screw (I think it's only one at most two) and the subsequent instrument panel removal is a whole lot easier.
For turbo models - don't forget to remove the vacuum pump line from the back of the turbo gauge. If you can't get it off - don't force it as it can break. Go below and find the other end of the line where it's easier to separate. It's under the foot well panel - a flexible rubber hose attached to a hard plastic tube. If you aren't sure which hose just follow it back up to the gauge.

For the 1996 & 1997 850's, the odo is held on by 3 T8 screws accessed from the rear. The electrical connection is pronged into the large circuit board and the connector, all white, is pulled straight up. As was mentioned, use a pair of needle nose pliers so as not to break anything.
Turning forward the speedometer is a slow process, but rewarding. I used a 4" long piece of pencil. At first I just used the eraser to turn the wheel counter clockwise - WRONG!! The eraser will disintegrate and the dust gets everywhere!! Wraping the eraser with masking tape solved this problem.
With the drill set to high, I got about 5,000 miles per hour. My hand got tired of holding the drill, a vice would have been better, but hold the odo in your other hand.
I now have the correct mileage and new bulbs.

Replaced the gear on my 850 to fix the odometer. Everything working fine except the mechanical odometer is turning too fast and measuring 60% higher than the electrical odometer. I should have counted the teeth but it fit fine. Any idea what else could do this other than the wrong gear?
Maybe it it trying to catch up to actual miles since it has not worked for a coule of years!
Thanks

Sounds like you got a gear for Kilometers instead of miles, or the instrument cluster originally came from Canada.
