Rear end rattle 1998 S40

Post by salmenah »

For as long as I've had it - 3years - on bumpy roads, a persistent croaky rattling sound seems to be coming from my rear suspensions or possibly the spare tyre area in the boot (although tyre and other stuff in that compartment all seem to be securely fastened). Does anyone know how to get rid of this noise please?

Thanks.

Process of elimination, unfortunately.

First remove everything from the boot that might cause the noise. Put the spare wheel in the rear seat, just in case of punctures, and go for a drive over the worst road surface you can find. That won't be hard in this country.

If the noise has gone start replacing the goodies in the boot until you find what it was.

If there is still a noise then it would appear to be mechanical. If you are an engineering type check your suspension. If not, find a good independent mechanic to check it for you. Forget about dealers, Kwikfit etc. They cost too much.
