2009 XC70 wont start, dash reads steering lock

Hi There and thankyou for your time.
My 2009 XC70 wagon wont start as per the heading. When the key is inserted into dash and a " click click click" noise starts. Push start button and "turn steering try start again" appears on the dash.
Steering is not locked and click click click continues when start pressed. Key then reluctant to come out, but once removed dash reads "steering lock, try again" Any thoughts guys, much appriecated.

Weird. Is the battery original? Weird things happen when a battery is dying.
