03 2.5 AWD rear wheels not working ...please keep reading

Post by jaces_dad »

Hi everyone, I've researched this on the site a little and can't find answers to all my questions so here goes... I noticed in that nasty snow storm he got here in the northeast that my awd isn't working. I've done some research and found the most common causes appear to be a pressure/temp sensor or the angle gear/sleeve. now i don't have any symptoms at all except for getting stuck in the snow and the car not handling well at all on slushy roads. There are no noises, nothing feels off, no smells, leaks, drips, nothing, except I can turn the drive shaft when the car is in park but I'm wondering if the shaft is only engaged when called on by the Haldex, or am I way off on how I think this system works? I'm trying to figure this out without going to the dealer, I really don't have the $120 my local dealer charges to scan the car for codes. Anyone have any ideas or tips on how I can check any of these? Thank you in advance.

In the absence of better information....... I believe the default proportion F/R is something like 90% F so would seem that the haldex needs to be engaged in order to see anything happen on the rear.
You might be able to pull the codes from the info center, I saw a thread on this recently but cant find it.
Failing that I'll try and see if I can find any troubleshooting tips in VIDA for you.

Much as I hate to point anyone away from MVS, this XC90 board can be quiter...If you get stuck stuck you might find info at http://www.volvoxc.com/forums/forum.php

i thought i read it was 65f/35r but i cant be sure. so it is normal to be able to turn the shaft like there is nothing attached at either end?

I'm honestly not sure about the shaft turn behavior, that's why I was saying in absence of better info. Your '03 is a Haldex Generation II I believe which is 95% front unless commanded otherwise. 2005 and later are Haldex III.
Since your system is Haldex II you can use other cars that have that same system as a reference for testing and troubleshooting. A lot of VAG stuff uses the same system: Quattros, 4 Motions etc, you'll have to verify which years use Haldex II though as I'm not sure.
Might be worth buying an el-cheapo VIDA\DICE adapter online for 150-200 from Asia to pull the codes?

8-) I would try looking for a 7.5 amp fuse in the rem then taking it from there.

Give this a shot to pull the codes, from here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =11&t=5827
stevick wrote:The dealer service guy showed me this trick (on the sly), claiming it will show whether any DTC fault codes are stored in the system. It works on my 2000 S80, and might be worth a try for others. Here's the procedure:
(1) start the car
(2) turn on the onboard computer to a display setting (say, average speed)
(3) hold down the "read" button on the turn signal arm for a few seconds and while still holding it down, do a quick double tap on the fog light button, then release the "read" button
(4) the message window will display the message "CHECKING DTCS", if you don't get this message, repeat (3) above until you do
(5) within a couple seconds, the message in my car changes to read "DTCS IN VEHICLE"
(6) now push the read button again to read each of the individual system modules (each push advances to read the next module sequentially). Mine reads as follows:
ABS CHECKING
SRS READY
TCM CHECKING
ECM CHECKING
AUM READY
CEM READY
DIM READY
DDM CHECKING
CCM CHECKING
LSM READY
PDM CHECKING
PSM CHECKING
REM READY
SWM READY
UEM DTC SET

I take the "DTCS IN VEHICLE" combined with "UEM DTC SET" to mean that I have a stored fault code in the Upper Electronics Module. It apparently does not give the actual code though, requiring the dealer's system to read and clear it.

I had not seen mention of this elsewhere, nor was I able to find any documentation of this function. I'm curious what readings others get. If nothing else, I hope this may help someone avoid unnecessary expense at the dealer.

It might be worth taking to a shop that can lift it and put it in drive and see if the rear wheels turn. Or you can do it at home but im not sure how you would lift up all 4 corners of the car at one time. Would be risky.
