Is my door broken? (pictures)

Post by eb2143 »

'98 S70
My driver's side door is not working properly. When I go to close or open the door the motion is not linear, it is very jerky at one point and makes disconcerting noises as well (popping sounds). I have included pictures because I can't imagine explaining this otherwise.

Upon closer examination, and by comparing it to the normally functioning passenger's side door, I can see that the middle hinge is nor working properly. At the point it connects to the doorframe, it moves in an left-right motion, and causes the popping sound.

I can't find what holds this hinge to the frame, I would like to try to tighten it ofcourse. I don't think it is welded, there seems to be hollow space behind it.

Can anybody tell me how to tighten it down again, or is this fix going to be harder than it should be?

I colored part of the hinge red in the first picture because this is the spot I can see moving in an in-and-out motion when on the passenger door it is comletely fixed and still during closing.

Hard to see due to the huge pictures, but this is a common problem. Here is a solution that is cost effective (dealer is outrageous): http://au.geocities.com/ozbrick850/door-stay_fix.html

That's my exact problem. I can actually see the failed spot welds. You would have thought Volvo might have fixed this on S70 after failures on 850's.

Still trying to decide what I'm going to do.

Sorry the pictures are bad and huge. They were actually taken in complete darkness, flash was doing all the work.

Can't see anything in your pictures but your door check is probably broken.
This is NOT uncommon

This may seem unhelpful, but I had this very problem with my 96 850, and the cheapest amd easiest fix was simply to remove the door stay. While I'm sure many people will come back with all sorts of reasons not to, I've not found one instance of wishing I'd repaired rather than removed in the 9 months (ish) since I took the offending part away! Plus free is even cheaper than $7.95 mentioned in the post above!

I agree with mcbrain.

Whether you decide to fix the problem or not, in the short-term it will pay you to disconnect the door stay.

See this thread https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... highlight=

I paid the penalty for not addressing the problem soon enough

Same thing happened to my '99 V70. Got a recomendation for a good Body Shop (Geroge's Garage here in San Antonio) and for $210 my door looks like new. Great work by George Celis but you need to find someone reliable or you could suffer mayor damage on the inside plastic parts due to the heat.
He welded a small steel bar inside the door and then attached the door stop to it so the frame would not give again.
