Francois850 wrote:My engine is in great condition, changed many things the past 2 months and passed inspection 2 weeks ago, no C.E.L. on, no codes. The only thing I did was to replace fluid and that's when it all started. Kinda wish the engine was the issue, would be maybe easier to fix... who knows...
Will check again the fluid this evening, got some inputs last night, will do a test and will get back with u... thanks!!!
I think you are missing the point of the good question by mercuric about abnormally high RPMs. That is asked because it tells you about the trans, not because there is any suspicion about the condition of the engine.

Here is the same question phrased differently: When you push on the accelerator pedal to open the throttle, and the car does not respond properly because very little power is transferred to the wheels, does the engine rev up?

In this thread, you've described very clearly a lack of torque, I understand that part, but there is no mention of what the RPMs are doing. You can tell by looking at the tachometer and it is key information. If the answer to the above question is no, then the trans is not slipping. Time to start thinking abut a clogged cat or something.

The more I think about it, the more this sounds like an electrical problem, or maybe oxygen sensors (car runs poorly when it goes into closed loop mode) or even an ECT sensor. But we gotta know about the RPMs ...

Yes the engine RPM goes up with little acceleration and you feel like the transmission wants to shift.... if I reduce the thottle, then it shifts. Yes to answer your question, the RPM becomes abnormal, too high!
I am a pilot, I do know what a tachometer is and the information it provides ;-)

Both O2 sensors are brand new, OEM Bosch made to fit. ECT sensor? What's that?

Um, sounds like the trans is slipping.

And I am pretty useless for troubleshooting transmission problems, sorry.

ECT is the engine coolant temp sensor, little brass dealy that screws in at the thermostat. I mentioned that because like the O2 sensors it helps determine air:fuel. But you've confirmed to me that this is a trans problem, not an engine problem, so ECT trouble seems not a very good idea.

The reason I said electrical is because resistance goes up with heat, it is common for switches, electronics and relays etc (or anything on the end of a fraying wire) to not work properly when they get hot. May be relevant here.

Ah yes ECT, duh... sorry. I replaced it a month ago and also the thermostat.
Well there is electrical components with the transmission so you may be on something...

I'd send a PM to jblackburn and ask him to read this thread, he is very good with solenoid problems on these trannys, he might have some ideas.

Btw, I am new on this forum and do not know him, maybe you can ask him to look at this thread for me, would be cool! Thanks!

I just want to add a few comments.

- There is a universal rule in car repair, whenever a new problem surfaces after a repair job, 99% of the time, the new problem is caused by the repair.

- Your car is 1997 850 with 35K, trans problems should not happen.

- The 850, S/V70: for a simple drain/refill, it takes about 3.3 qts to fill it back up.

- If you do a flush (disconnecting the upper cooler line), there is a chance that the clip was not reconnected properly. The clip has a THICK side and THIN side (look carefully and you will see). The THICK side of the clip faces the radiator.
